Welcome back to Operation Agency Freedom! Today, we have a truly fascinating episode lined up for you. I’m your host, Chris Martinez, CEO of Bloom, where we aim to elevate marketing agencies. In this episode, I had the pleasure of chatting with Andy Buyting, the brilliant mind behind Tulip Media Group and a two-time best-selling author. We explored some innovative strategies that marketing agencies can leverage to set themselves apart from the competition.

One of the key topics we dove into was the strategic use of printed magazines by Managed Service Providers (MSPs). In a world dominated by digital marketing, Andy emphasizes the unique, tangible value that printed materials offer. Many companies are producing these magazines quarterly, although there are variations including annual, bi-monthly, and even monthly distributions. The tangible nature of print materials not only makes brands memorable but also enhances their perceived value in the market. While the direct Return on Investment (ROI) might be harder to quantify compared to digital efforts like PPC ads, the increased brand recognition and more frequent client meetings speak volumes.

Another insightful topic we covered was the integration of print media into broader digital marketing strategies. Despite being harder to measure, print media plays a crucial role in creating brand recognition and opening up new business opportunities. Andy shared that even if a prospect doesn’t open the magazine, the very physical presence of it can elevate the brand’s perception. This led to an interesting discussion on how such printed materials can be a cost-effective supplement, especially amidst rising digital ad costs.

Andy gave us a glimpse into the operations at Tulip Media. Founded over ten years ago, the company has thrived by offering custom magazines to help businesses stand out in their industries. Andy also mentioned the transition to digital content management, but it’s their print programs that remain the cornerstone of their business, drawing 80% of their clientele. As digital ad costs skyrocket, there has been a resurgence in the value of print media, making it a less cluttered and more differentiated marketing approach.

We also talked about the administrative aspects of running a business, where Andy shared his experiences and tips on recognizing personal strengths and weaknesses. Andy stresses the importance of delegating operational tasks to someone who is more focused on processes and growth. He implemented this by hiring Trevor Arsenault to manage day-to-day operations at Tulip Media, allowing him to focus on strategic planning and his other ventures. This decision, supported by the company’s consistent profitability, also gave Andy more freedom to pursue his personal goals.

One of the more colorful parts of our conversation was Andy’s unique branding story involving his distinctive jacket featuring a design of one red tulip among yellow ones. Inspired by Canadian sports figure Don Cherry, this jacket was created as a last-minute visual aid for a conference presentation and ended up becoming a memorable branding tool. Now a regular part of Andy’s conference attire, the jacket breaks the ice with audiences and underscores the importance of standing out, even if it means stepping out of your comfort zone.

In conclusion, this episode was a treasure trove of insights into how blending print and digital strategies can elevate your brand and open up new business opportunities. While the ROI of print media might be harder to measure, the enhanced brand recognition and the ability to stand out can drive substantial growth. Andy Buyting’s experience underscores the need to align your business strategies with your personal goals and recognize the value of delegating operational tasks to trusted partners.
